Abstract

Training on the production of simplisia (crude plant material) and extracts from green betel leaves (Piper betle L.) serves as an initiative to enhance the knowledge and skills of pharmacy students regarding the processing of natural materials for use in traditional medicine. This community service activity was conducted on April 29, 2026, at the Pharmacology Laboratory of Imelda University Medan, involving 35 pharmacy students as participants. The implementation methods included lectures and discussions, demonstrations of simplisia and extract preparation, hands-on practical sessions, and evaluations using pre-tests and post-tests. The simplisia production process involved stages such as wet sorting, washing, chopping, drying, dry sorting, and packaging. Subsequently, the simplisia was extracted using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as the solvent and then concentrated using a rotary evaporator to obtain a viscous extract. The results indicated that the participants were able to understand and execute all stages of simplisia and extract preparation according to correct procedures. The resulting product was a greenish-black viscous extract weighing 41.53 g. Furthermore, the evaluation results showed an increase in participant knowledge, alongside high levels of enthusiasm throughout the event. This training enhanced student competence in the field of natural product pharmacy and is expected to serve as a foundation for developing herbal formulations based on betel leaf extract in future activities
